چکیده

In this paper, we propose a new approach to formalize realworld obligations that may be found in existing legislation. Specifically, we propose to formalize real-world obligations by combining insights of two logical frameworks: Input/Output logic, belonging to the literature in deontic logic and normative reasoning, and the Reification-based approach of Jerry R. Hobbs, belonging to the literature in Natural Language Semantics. The present paper represents the first step of the ProLeMAS project, whose main goal is the one of filling the gap between the current logical formalizations of legal text, mostly propositional, and the richness of Natural Language Semantics.

Reified Input/Output logic - a position paper

We propose a new approach to formalize obligations and permissions from existing legislation. Specifically, we propose to combine two frameworks: Input/Output logic and the logic of prof. J.R. Hobbs. The former is a well-known framework in normative reasoning. The latter is a neo-Davidsonian wide-coverage first order logic for Natural Language Semantics. We propose to wrap Input/Ouput logic aro...

The Logic of Normative Systems

Logical architectures combine several logics into a more complex logical system. In this paper we study logical architectures using input/output operations corresponding to the functionality of logical components. We propose a logic of normative systems, based on an architecture of counts-as conditionals, institutional constraints, obligations and permissions. For counts-as conditionals and ins...

A Logical Architecture of a Normative System

Logical architectures combine several logics into a more complex logical system. In this paper we study a logical architecture using input/output operations corresponding to the functionality of logical components. We illustrate how the architectural approach can be used to develop a logic of a normative system based on logics of counts-as conditionals, institutional constraints, obligations an...

Combining Constitutive and Regulative Norms in Input/Output Logic

In this paper we study three semantics to combine constitutive and regulative norms. In the first semantics, called the simple-minded semantics, the output of the constitutive norms are intermediate facts used as input for the regulative norms. The second method is called throughput, and adds the input of the constitutive norms to the intermediate facts. The third method is called reusable thro...

Permissions and Undercutters in Argumentation

Input/output logics have been proposed to formalize rule based inference. They are mainly inspired by deontic logic, or the logic of obligations, although it has also been shown that they generalize for example Reiter’s normal default logic. A recent extension of the input/output logics formalizes various notions of permission. We are interested in the question whether input/output logics can b...
